Public Seminar: Contemporary Challenges in United Nations Peace Operations - Reflections from South Sudan, Somalia and Colombia

About the seminar

The seminar will discuss Mauricio's experience working with the UN Peace operations and an update on the successes and challenges of the implementation of the Colombian Peace Agreement.

He will share stories of the Rafting for Peace team from Caquetá, Colombia who are part of a fledgling adventure tourism venture supported by the United Nations mission at Colombia’s Miravalle Territorial Area for Training and Reincorporation (TATR), about 180 miles south of Bogota. The team will be present at the seminar after returning to Brisbane having competed in the International Rafting Federations 2019 World Rafting Championships in Tully, Australia. 

A networking reception with an opportunity to meet the Rafting for Peace team from Colombia will follow the seminar from 7–8pm. Light refreshments will be provided. 

About the presenter

Mr Mauricio Artiñano is currently the Special Assistant to the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Colombia.  He has served in Colombia with the United Nations for over three years. Prior to that, he served with the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia and the UN Mission in South Sudan. His research has also taken him to visit the UN peace operations in Mali, Kosovo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Haiti, as well as the UN Office for West Africa. Mauricio received his Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from Tufts University and his Master in Public Affairs degree from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
