HASS 3MT Faculty Heats 2022 - Register now to attend!

The UQ 3MT competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. In 2022, the individual School/Institute 3MT heats will be run as one event for all HASS Schools and ISSR, so that each individual session runs consecutively. Everyone is welcome to attend!

WHY COMPETE IN 3MT?
Developed by Emeritus Professor Alan Lawson (School of Communications and Arts), this now international competition cultivates students’ academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Additionally, students increase their capability to communicate their research to a non-specialist audience. Participating in 3MT also gives students the opportunity to publicise themselves as a researcher and potentially gain exposure to collaborators, funders, and media.

Each School/Institute Heat winner will receive:
  1. $100 minimum from the Faculty (some additional prizes are on offer from Schools/ISSR).
You can spend this on books, bills, bowls of ramen or anything else you would like.
  2. A one-on-one session with an expert
This session will help you to develop your 3MT presentation and enhance your research communication skills. You'll have a one-on-one meeting with award-winning author and recognised expert on creative practice, popular literature, and the publishing industry, Prof Kim Wilkins! Author of more than 30 full-length works of fiction with her books translated into more than 20 languages globally, Kim will provide advice on how to refine your 3MT presentation and more effectively communicate your research to a non-specialist audience (beyond the 3MT competition).
  3. Represent your unit in the HASS Faculty Final
Winners will also compete in the upcoming HASS 3MT Faculty Final (3 August, 10am-1pm) with a chance to win:
    • Winner: $500
    • Runner-up: $250
    • People's choice: $250
