This presentation offers a historical look at the use of photography in the informational and fundraising strategies of international organizations.  The figure of the dead or suffering child has been a centrepiece of humanitarian campaigns for over a century.   Recently, a photograph of a dead 3-year old Syrian refugee, Alan Kurdi, created enormous publicity around the world.  But are new visual technologies and social media as revolutionary as some claim?  Evidence suggests that in earlier eras too, photographs could “go viral” and achieve iconic status.
