This presentation is an overview of research examining how Australian artists, George Gittoes and Jon Cattapan, depict contemporary militarised technology in their paintings.

Particular attention is paid to representations of night vision capabilities and unmanned airborne military drones. Both artists have worked in war and conflict zones, where they have each used night vision technology. Gittoes has witnessed the deployment of airborne drones. This research investigates how these experiences inform the artists’ paintings and practices in ways that trigger moral, ethical and political questions about the use and ongoing development of militarised technology.
