As the Roman Republic gives way to empire, Antony and Cleopatra find themselves caught between the demands of power and the pull of desire, in a story where love, ambition, and empire collide. 

We invite you to the Centre for Western Civilisation’s Winter School, where you can immerse yourself in the world of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra across a two-and-a-half-day residential program. Set amid the political upheavals of the ancient Mediterranean, this drama follows the turbulent relationship between the Roman triumvir Mark Antony and the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra. 

This program offers a unique opportunity to engage deeply with one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies in the company of fellow enthusiasts and UQ experts, across a range of lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities. 
Join us this winter for a memorable encounter with one of Shakespeare’s most spectacular tragedies, where two extraordinary lives burn with unforgettable intensity. 

Other activities include: 
•    An artefact handling workshop at the RD Milns Antiquities Museum 
•    An acting workshop run by a professional theatre company
•    A film viewing of DeMille’s Cleopatra (1934) 
•    A presentation on toxicology and snake handling 

Content note: Antony and Cleopatra includes themes of violence, death, and suicide. These topics will be discussed in their historical, cultural, and literary contexts. 

Applications open in February 2027 and close early May.
 

Event Details

Dates: The Winter School commences at 2pm on Monday 5 July 2027 and finishes at 2pm on Wednesday 7 July 2027.

Location: Women’s College, UQ, College Road, St Lucia QLD 4067.

Eligibility: The Winter School is open to all Year 11 and Year 12 high school students with a love of humanities. It will be particularly valuable to students studying English, Ancient History, or Study of Religion. 

Cost: The Winter School is free. Accommodation and full board during the Winter School are provided. Travel subsidies are available for students travelling from over 400 km away from Brisbane.
