The support for UQ's first Giving Day last Wednesday was outstanding!
The University raised more than $2.1million in total from almost 1400 donors – going above and beyond the initial goal of $1 million from 1000 donors in 24 hours.
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences were the highest fundraising Faculty or Institute at UQ, raising over $247,000 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarships, through 64 individual gifts.
These funds will ultimately establish multiple new Scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students studying any undergraduate HASS degree who are facing financial hardship.
As an endowed fund, it will continue to provide opportunities for students for generations to come.
HASS Executive Dean Professor Heather Zwicker said she was both humbled and awed by the support for these important scholarships.
“To see the collective care the Faculty’s academic and professional staff have for students, for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, and for a brighter, more just future is a sentiment that makes me proud,” she said.
“The generous support of the UQ Community will ensure greater opportunities for the University for many years to come.”
UQ’s first ever Giving Day brought together a community of like-minded people to achieve a common goal. Together, the HASS Faculty demonstrated its commitment to inclusivity and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.
Thank you to everyone who participated in #UQGivingDay – whether it was through donations, time, expertise or advocacy – your support helps create change for a brighter future.
