Congratulations to Professor Felicity Meakins from the School of Languages and Cultures who has been awarded a prestigious 2025 Australian Laureate Fellowship to explore how Indigenous languages encode ecological knowledge and social dynamics.

The Kathleen Fitzpatrick Australian Laureate Fellowship is one of 2 esteemed named Fellowships for women researchers who undertake an ambassadorial role to promote women in research and to encourage outstanding female early-career researchers to pursue a research career in Australia.

This Fellowship funds research in the humanities, arts and social science disciplines and Professor Meakins research, Amplifying Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK) in Western Science with Language, will support Indigenous language renewal, contribute to curriculum development and inform conservation.

Given that Australia has one of the highest rates of language loss worldwide, Professor Meakins work is crucial.

This Fellowship is one of 17 Australian Laureate Fellowships the Australian Research Council (ARC) will provide $65.2 million in funding for over 5 years.

Along with Professor Meakins, 2 other UQ researchers secured fellowships this round - Professor James Ward and Professor Julie Henry both from the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Behavioural Sciences.
