UQ Centre for Western Civilisation 2027 Winter School

This two-and-a-half-day residential program explores Shakespeare’s compelling tragedy, Antony and Cleopatra. It will discuss the nature and performance of the play as well as the historical background that informs it.  

Across a series of lectures, workshops, and hands-on activities, students will examine the political struggles of Republican Rome and Ptolemaic Egypt, and learn how this romance between rulers has been represented over the centuries.

If you enjoy reading, writing, and intellectual discussion about great literary texts, and want to study this Shakespearean play in-depth, this is the Winter School for you!

Activities from previous years include:

• Screenings of films such as Jean Cocteau’s Orphée and Orson Welles' Citizen Kane
• A ghost tour of the Toowong Cemetery delivered by Ghost Tours Australia
• Acting and presentation workshops delivered by the Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble
• A guided tour of the Queensland Art Gallery

Applications open in February 2027 and close early May.
 

Event Details

Dates: The Winter School commences at 2pm on Monday 5 July 2027 and finishes at 2pm on Wednesday 7 July 2027.

Location: Women’s College, UQ, College Road, St Lucia QLD 4067.

Eligibility: The Winter School is open to all Year 11 and Year 12 high school students with a love of humanities. It will be particularly valuable to students studying English, Ancient History, or Study of Religion. 

Cost: The Winter School is free. Accommodation and full board during the Winter School are provided. Travel subsidies are available for students travelling from over 400 km away from Brisbane.
