What I love about the Bachelor of Communication at UQ is the diversity of courses and minor options which provides very practical knowledge for a career in PR and Communication.

What are you studying?

I am studying a Bachelor of Communication majoring in Public Relations from The University of Queensland (UQ).

What is the best thing about studying at UQ?

Studying at UQ has given me a lot of opportunities to develop myself both socially and professionally. I have also found great opportunities in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS). Specifically, I have participated in a Student-Staff Partnership project called Industry Engagement and Support Communication. From this project, I have been exposed to more opportunities and got a chance to expand my network with industry professionals, UQ staff and other students in the HASS faculty.

What is special or unique about your program?

What I love about the Bachelor of Communication at UQ is the diversity of courses and minor options which provides very practical knowledge for a career in PR and Communication. The courses not only bring relevant theoretical knowledge, hands on experience but also provide many opportunities that come with it. Especially, the opportunity to expand my professional network and develop my portfolio for a future career in PR. The availability of the courses within the communication degree were perfect for pursuing what i’m really interested in.

Why did you choose to study in Brisbane?

I love living in Brisbane because of the great weather throughout the year. Brisbane is also a very safe city and not too crowded, therefore, it's a perfect city to study and to live in.

What will you do after you graduate?

After I finish my bachelor degree at the end of this year, I'm going to continue my academic path with postgraduate study.  After that, I want to work in a PR or Marketing Agency, then work in an in-house department so I can decide which will be a better path for my future career.

What challenges have you came across in your study? How did you overcome them?

One of the things that I found challenging when taking the PR major was the media production related tasks such as video making and editing since I did not have prior practice in these skills. However, the School of Arts and Communication at UQ has provided me a wide range of design and video production workshops. Therefore, I feel more confident and well-prepared when entering the workforce.

What advice would you give to international students who are considering studying at UQ?

During your time at UQ, I recommend for all international students to participate in student clubs to help your expand your network. Besides, UQ also provides many events throughout the year, so make sure to join as many events as possible.
