2021 Changes for the Bachelor of Journalism
We have recently completed a review of the Bachelor of Journalism (BJ) and have made some minor changes to this program for students commencing in Semester 1, 2021.
When viewing the 2020 BJ course list on the Programs and Courses website, you can change which year you are viewing using the dropdown box near the top right of the list to compare the 2021 BJ with the pre-2021 program.
The changes we have made to this program will affect students commencing in Semester 1, 2021.
As a continuing student, you will be able to complete your current program and there will be no substantive change to your program requirements.
In the 2021 program:
- The BJ program parts have been renamed, but the structure of the program is unchanged
- Only one course, JOUR2100 Social Justice Storytelling has been revised and will now be offered as JOUR3100 Social Justice Storytelling.
- While the Interactive Design Minor will no longer be offered, there is a new Digital Media minor

What does this mean for continuing students?
Please be assured that if you are a continuing student enrolled in the BJ program, you will be able to complete with the program structure and rules that were in place when you commenced.
Only one course, JOUR2100 Social Justice Storytelling has been revised and will now be offered as JOUR3100 Social Justice Storytelling.
You will also be able to choose the new Digital Media minor as part of your elective choice if this is your preference.
If you are thinking of changing to the 2021 BCommun/BJ dual program (program code 2508), BJ/BA dual program (program code 2102), BBusMan/BJ dual program (program code 2510), BJ/LLB(Hons) dual program (program code 2512), BSc/BJ dual program (program code 2496) please read sections 3 and 4 carefully.
I am thinking of changing to a 2021 BJ dual program. What should I consider?
If you are thinking of changing to any of the 2021 BJ dual programs listed in section 2, and you are a domestic student, please note that you will be charged the 2021 fee schedule. Please view the unit of study fees schedule for further details.
Your decision about changing should be informed by how many units of study you have already completed. We will try to maximise transfer of credit if you change to a 2021 program. If you have completed more than 16 units, we highly recommend you complete your current program and course list because it might not be possible to credit all courses you have completed.
If you change into a 2021 BJ dual program, you must follow the new structure and rules for BOTH component programs. You cannot choose to follow the old structure in one component, and the new structure in the other.
For example, if you change into the 2021 BJ/BA dual program, you cannot complete pre-2021 BA plan combinations such as a major and two minors, or BA electives with an extended major (in 2021 rules, an extended major must be combined with a minor). Also BA plans that have been discontinued from component programs in 2020 will not be available in 2021 dual programs.
If you still wish to change to a 2021 program please contact our Student Administration team for further advice.
How do I apply to change to a 2021 BJ dual program?

I still have questions. Who can I talk to?
If you have any questions about the information you have read, including how to apply to change to the 2021 program, you can talk to a Student Administration team member in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS).
Please note we cannot provide specific enrolment advice at the counter or over the phone, but we can answer general questions about the changes to HASS undergraduate programs for 2021.
Due to the large number of undergraduate students we will be assisting and supporting over the next few months, please allow at least two weeks for a response. Outline all questions and attach your completed progression check to your email, as this will assist us in responding to your specific situation as soon as possible.
