Six new degree programs for 2017

19 August 2016

The foundation degree of choice for Prime Ministers and many other political leaders will be available in Queensland for the first time next year.

Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron and former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser are some of the best-known politicians who took a Bachelor of Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE).

The PPE is one of six new degree programs – spanning science, arts, criminology, law, politics, economics and exercise science – that will debut at The University of Queensland in 2017.

UQ Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Doune Macdonald said UQ’s faculties of Business, Economics and Law, and Humanities and Social Sciences would jointly offer the new PPE degree.

“This elite academic program will offer broad and rigorous education in the foundations of politics, philosophy and economics,” Professor Macdonald said.

“Students will examine current and future global challenges, drawing from historical, political, social and economic knowledge bases.

“As a university that takes pride in innovation and delivering graduates who create change in the world, it is imperative that we continue to innovate and update the programs available to students.”

UQ joins a distinguished group of universities already offering the program, including Oxford University and Yale University.

UQ recently rocketed up the prestigious Academic Ranking of World Universities, arguably the most recognised ranking of the world’s more than 10,000 universities, to rank 55th globally and second in Australia. The news comes on the back of UQ’s top-50 placings in other global rankings.
