HASS welcomes Deputy Executive Dean

Greg MarstonProfessor Greg Marston will commence as Deputy Executive Dean for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences on 2 March. As a member of the Faculty leadership group, Professor Marston will take carriage of Faculty projects, partnerships and public engagement activities.

Professor Marston has an extensive academic career drawing on social science disciplines including social policy, sociology, political economy, social work and policy studies. He has expertise in qualitative approaches to social inquiry and uses different methods to critically explore contemporary issues such as poverty and inequality, conditional welfare and the role of the social sciences and humanities in responding to the risks and opportunities associated with automation.

A Queenslander by birth and a first-in-family graduate of two Brisbane universities (Bachelor of Social Science - QUT 1993, PhD in Social Policy - UQ 2001), Greg has also worked in peak bodies in Canberra, at RMIT’s Centre for Applied Social Science Research, and at QUT’s Faculty of Health on issues including housing needs of low-income Australians, disability and public tenancy, the treatment of onshore arrivals in Australia and the impact of Centrelink breaches and sanctions.

From 2016 to 2019, Professor Marston was Head of School Social Science at UQ, strengthening cross-disciplinary collaboration and bringing a focus on improved teaching and learning and curriculum reform.
