UQ's new Sun Stadium is officially open! This is the University's first public art installation in many years. An analemmatic sundial, Sun Stadium tells solar time using the person standing in the middle of the circle as the indicator (or “gnomon”). It’s also a place to sit and be present, alone or with others.
The work is by Bundjulung and Ngapuhi artist and choreographer Amrita Hepi, using recycled materials from Five Mile Radius and embedding poetry by UQP-published poet Jazz Money: a truly interdisciplinary representation of what’s possible through UQ Arts.
Sun Stadium is a statement about what is important to us as a university: we value First Nations knowledges and perspectives, we value creativity, we value opportunities for reflection and connection, and we value our campuses as inclusive, safe spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Check out Sun Stadium next time you’re heading to the UQ Lakes bus loop or the City Cat.
