What to Expect

This is a student-led conversation, we anticipate exploring themes such as:

  • What can students do with their Writing studies?
  • How are the knowledge and skills gained from your Writing studies applicable to real life careers?
  • What can students learn about the expectations of the workforce, and how it compares to their experience as a university student?

Through your booking and in the session, you will have the opportunity to ask questions to leading industry professionals working in relevant roles and hear their experiences, stories and advice.

Pierce Wilcox, Novelist / Poet / Playwright / Librettist
A novelist, poet, playwright, librettist and more – Pierce is an award-winning creative whose diverse works have been loved across Australia. He employs his passion for speculative fiction in his writing and academic exploration of game design. Pierce is currently an PhD candidate in Creative Writing at the University of Queensland.  

 

Bianca Millroy, Freelance Writer and Editor / PhD candidate
Bianca thrives in exploring the connections between science and creativity. Her current role as a freelance writer, editor and podcaster at Science Write Now allows her to work with a range of incredible writers, artists and scientists. Bianca is a PhD candidate in Communication and Arts at UQ, studying Creative Nonfiction. Her project is titled: Cognitive Conversations: Science-informed storytelling in the neurology clinic. She also works as a research assistant for AustLit, the bibliographical database of Australian literature and storytelling here at UQ.

Tom Doig, Creative Writing Lecturer, UQ
Tom is an award-winning author specialising in non-fiction. His vast experience in writing, journalism, and academia has seen his work across the world. In 2023, Tom received two grants for his upcoming book about “subcultures of imminent collapse”. Tom completed a PhD in Literary Journalism and Disaster Studies, and he is currently a Creative Writing lecturer at UQ.
