Museum Studies Completion Advice
The Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies are no longer available to commencing students. Semester 2, 2024 was the last intake for both postgraduate programs.
What does this mean for currently enrolled Museum Studies students?
As a currently enrolled Museum Studies student, you will be able to complete your program requirements, and we are here to assist you to plan your enrolment accordingly with the provided Completion Planners.
Flexible Core/Core Courses
Three of the Museum Studies Flexible Core/Core Courses will continue to be offered until 2026. Students are strongly encouraged to prioritise completing these Flexible Core/Core Courses in the next two years (2025-2026).
- MUSM7000 Museums: Theory and Practice (Last offering in Semester 1 2026)
- MUSM7002 Collections (Last offering in Semester 1 2026)
- MUSM7003 Museum Management (Last offering in Semester 2 2026)
MUSM7013 Digital Curation: Objects, Exhibitions, Content will be offered for the final time in Semester 2, 2025. Students who have not completed this course are directed to enrol in this course in Semester 2, 2025.
The course HHSS6000 Research Design has been discontinued as a result of the changes to the 2025 End on Honours programs. Students who have not completed this course are directed to complete the approved alternative course, COMU7292 Communication Research Design. This is outlined in the Completion Planners below.
Elective Courses
The Museum Studies Program Elective Courses will still be offered, with the exception of MUSM7030 Museum Learning and Outreach which will be offered in partnership with QAGOMA for the last time in Semester 2, 2025.

What does this mean for Museum Studies students who have interrupted their studies?
If you are enrolled in a Museum Studies program but did not enrol in courses in Semester 2, 2024 or have not enrolled in courses for some time, you will need to ensure you retain your place in your program either by enrolling in at least one course in Semester 1, 2025 or, if you are not ready to return to your studies, by submitting an interruption request for Semester 1, 2025 (and also Semester 2, 2025 if you do not wish to study at all in 2025).
Depending upon the length of time since your last course enrolment, your enrolment in your program might have been suspended. If this is the case, you will need to submit a Resumption request via your myUQ Dashboard My Request. If you experience difficulties with this process, please contact HASS Faculty Student Administration.
Information regarding the Interruption and Resumption processes is available at Retention of place and interruption of studies - my.UQ - University of Queensland.
Please be aware when planning the remainder of your program of the ‘teach out’ period during which courses will be available. Should you not complete a course by the time of its last offering, you are unlikely to be able to complete your program.
What does this mean for Museum Studies students who may wish to interrupt their studies?
After commencing your program, you might want to take a temporary break. Officially, this is called 'interrupting your studies'.
Regardless of when you commenced your UQ studies, there is a limit to both the length and the number of interruptions you can take, and a new process to apply for an interruption and/or return from an interruption.
As the Museum Studies programs have now been discontinued, you will need to formally apply to interrupt your enrolment in order to retain your place in your program. You can apply for a maximum of two (2) periods of interruption, and each period of interruption can be for 6 months or 12 months. Information regarding this process is available at Retention of place and interruption of studies - my.UQ - University of Queensland. This page includes a link to apply to interrupt your studies, or you can apply via your myUQ Dashboard My Request.
If your request is approved, when you are due to return to your studies you can simply enrol in courses for the relevant semester. In the case that you wish to return earlier than the end of your approved interruption (for example, you were approved to interrupt for 2 semesters but wish to return after 1 semester), you will need to submit an Early Resumption request via your my.UQ Dashboard.
Please note that, due to the limited offerings of Flexible Core/Core Courses, students are encouraged to prioritise completing these courses in the next two years and, on this basis, applications to interrupt might not be able to be approved.
What does this mean for Museum Studies students who commenced in 2024 but did not successfully complete any courses?
As you have not successfully completed a course in 2024, unfortunately you have not retained your place in this program. As the Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies and Master of Museum Studies programs have been discontinued, please apply for another UG postgraduate program for 2025.
Exit options
If you have completed courses towards either the Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies or the Master of Museum Studies but do not consider it feasible to complete your program requirements, you might wish to investigate exit options. If this is the case, please contact the HASS Faculty Student Administration team.
