You're invited to join us on campus for this professional networking event focused on Careers in Criminology and Criminal Justice.
This session covers:
- What can you do with your Criminology studies?
- What should students studying Criminology do to enhance their employability during their university studies?
- How are the knowledge and skills gained from your Criminology studies applicable to real life careers?
You will have the opportunity to ask questions to leading industry professionals working in relevant roles and hear first hand some of the experiences and advice our panel has to offer.

Meet our panel
Ursula Roeder, Deputy Commissioner, Community Corrections and Specialist Operations, Queensland Corrective Services
Ms. Roeder has been a dedicated member of Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) since 1994, holding various roles such as Custodial Correctional Officer, Custodial Psychologist, Project Director, Regional Manager, and Assistant Commissioner, Custodial Operations. Her commitment and professionalism earned her the Australia Corrections Medal in 2018. Currently serving as Deputy Commissioner for Community Corrections and Specialist Operations, she brings a unique skill set spanning custodial, community corrections, and strategic domains. Ms. Roeder has led crucial projects, including the successful implementation of GPS monitoring for dangerous sexual offenders. Her extensive operational expertise and strategic knowledge continue to drive positive outcomes for prisoners and offenders. She has a Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) from UQ.
Scott McLaren, Superintendent, Queensland Police Services
Scott has been with Queensland Police Service (QPS) since 1988, holding various roles in general duties, water police, forensic services, and intelligence. As a Commissioned Officer since 2015, he has served in operational and strategic capacities, including relief as Superintendent. Presently, he is the Superintendent, State Custody and Property Group, overseeing the management of risks related to QPS custody and property statewide. Scott has received several awards, including the Medal of the Order of Australia and the Australian Federal Police Operations Medal. He has multiple tertiary degrees, including a Bachelor of Social Science (psychology) and a Master of Business Administration (leadership). Currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy, looking at the application of forensic science within policing intelligence and counterterrorism.
Nadine Robinson, Manager Community Corrections Training, Queensland Corrective Services
Nadine has worked in Corrective Services for 17 years across custodial, community and corporate settings. Her success includes implementing a transformative triple S program and leading the Training Review project. As Manager of Community Corrections and Specialist Operations Training at QLD Corrective Services Academy, she implemented the first front training strategy for Community Corrections in QLD. Nadine has been the recipient of several awards for excellence and leadership and takes pride in empowering her team. Beyond her career, she advocates for dementia awareness, speaking at conferences, universities, and assists support groups. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Criminology from James Cook University.
Howard Kemp, Acting Inspector, Queensland Police Services
Howard boasts an impressive 35-year tenure with the Queensland Police Service. After dedicating years to operational duties, he transitioned to training and development. Howard took on the role of Acting Manager for QPS Recruiting in February 2023, coinciding with the QPS's commitment to increase staff by 2025, with an additional 1450 officers. Since assuming this position, he has spearheaded various innovative recruiting initiatives, including the recruitment of international police officers, Special Constables (former QPS officers), and the introduction of enticing financial incentives for aspiring QPS officers. Driven by a strong passion for making a difference, Howard holds a Business Degree and a Master of Professional Studies, further enhancing his leadership in the QPS.
Srian Goonewardene, Recruitment Advisor, Queensland Corrective Services
Srian is a Recruitment Advisor with Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) and is currently engaged in the Southern Queensland Correctional Precinct Stage 2 (SQCP-S2) project. QCS will be spearheading the recruitment of over 800 positions for a new Correctional Centre in Gatton, QLD, set to open early to mid-2024. With a wealth of experience in recruitment and corrections, Srian previously served as an Operations Manager in a Recruitment company and as a Detainee Services Manager at Serco Australia, where he managed off-site Immigration Detention facilities. Originally from the USA, Srian pursued his education at The University of California, Merced, and also served in the US Marine Corps. Since 2011, he has been based in Australia.
Representative, Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation
Australian Federal Police (AFP) member who is currently rotating through the 2023 Graduate Program and has experience in both business deliver at the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE), and operational portfolios across the broader AFP will be in attendance.
