2021 Changes for the Bachelor of Arts
We have recently completed a review of the Bachelor of Arts and have made some changes to this program for students commencing in Semester 1, 2021.
Some of the changes were made to standardise aspects of UQ undergraduate programs, including minimum requirements for the study of Level 3 courses. Other changes were made to ensure that we have a sustainable suite of program, plan and course offerings.
When viewing the 2020 BA course list on the Programs and Courses website, you can change which year you are viewing using the dropdown box near the top right of the list to compare the 2021 BA with the pre-2021 program.
As a continuing student, your choice of plans (Minors, Majors, Extended Majors) will determine to what extent you are affected by these changes, but please be assured that if you remain in your pre-2021 single or dual degree program you will be able to complete the combination of plans you have commenced.

1. What is changing in 2021 for the Bachelor of Arts?
- Students commencing the BA in 2021 will be required to complete one of the following program structures:
- Two 16-unit Majors; or
- One 24-unit Extended Major and one 8-unit Minor (single BA and BA duals)
- A number of plans —largely Extended Majors— have been discontinued (see section 4) while the breadth of study areas in the BA has been retained with a smaller number of new plans being introduced:
- Classical Languages plans have been reconfigured separately as Ancient Greek and Latin
- French plans have been reconfigured separately as French and French Advanced
- Japanese plans have been reconfigured separately as Japanese and Japanese Advanced
- Streams have been removed from all language plans
- The Studies in Australian Culture Minor has been renamed to Australian Studies Minor
- 8-unit Minors now have their own course lists
- The course list terminology of gateway, cornerstone and capstone has been replaced by a new look course list
- There are increased Level 3 course requirements in Majors and Extended Majors to align with University policy
- A number of courses have been discontinued but there are 53 new or redesigned courses

What does this mean for continuing students?
Students commencing the BA in 2021 will be required to follow the new program structure, rules and course list.
Students continuing in the BA will be able to complete their program as planned, even if a plan or plan combination/structure is no longer available to commencing students. There will be changes to the course offerings available in some plans, but alternatives for completion of the plan will be provided.
