Drew Copeland

School Teacher
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) has provided me with both the theory and practical knowledge in order to be able to confidently step into the classroom and teach a variety of students.

Why did you choose to study at UQ?
I completed my dual undergraduate degree with UQ and wanted to stay in the same system, as I enjoyed my prior experiences. Along with this I believe UQ has one of the best reputations for higher education, especially in the School of Education.

What is the best thing about studying at UQ?
Studying at UQ provides a number of opportunities that I really appreciate. The first being the level of academic staff teaching the courses. The lecturers and tutors are very knowledgeable and experienced in their respected fields and provide valuable insights into the profession. Not only are they insightful but they also have the ability to get to know you individually, an aspect I am very thankful for.

What is the best thing about your program at UQ?
The Master of Teaching (Secondary) has provided me with both the theory and practical knowledge in order to be able to confidently step into the classroom and teach a variety of students. I am thankful for the two years, instead of the one year the previous diploma offered, as I believe this has better equipped me with the foundations I need in order to be a successful educator.

What do you hope your study leads to?
After graduation I plan to teach in the Queensland state school system for a couple of years. After this I want to travel overseas, most likely to the United Kingdom and teach there to further develop my pedagogical practice, whilst also travelling in my downtime. After this I hope to return home and continue to teach here.

What advice would you give to starting students in your course?
If you are passionate about teaching and want to pursue a career in education then I believe this course is the right fit for you. Not only do you learn the skills and insights of the profession, but from my personal experience a number of employers find the postgraduate degree appealing.

What challenges have you came across in your study? How did you overcome them?
Coming from a science and business background, I found the Master of Teaching a different style of degree. Compared to my undergraduate degrees the assessment was very different and certain aspects were somewhat challenging at first. Due to the nature of this degree, and the fact that those studying it have come from a number of background, we were able to learn from one another as well as the course academics to
develop these skills.
