Recent Changes to the Bachelor of Arts
This page provides updates and guidance on recent changes to the Bachelor of Arts program requirements.
Students commencing the BA will be required to follow the program structure and plan (minor/major/extended major) requirements for the year they commenced study.
Students continuing in the BA will be able to complete their program and plan requirements as planned, even if these are not available to commencing students. There will be changes to the course offerings available in some plan(s) requirements, but alternatives for completion will be provided.
2025 Changes for Music in the Bachelor of Arts
The University has recently completed a review of Music plans (Major, Minor, Extended Major) listed in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and BA dual programs, and as a result there have been changes to the BA program for students commencing in Semester 1, 2025.
These changes have been made to ensure a streamlined, simplified, and sustainable range of curriculum offered in the Music plans listed in the BA.
These changes will affect all students commencing the BA or BA dual program in Semester 1, 2025.
As a continuing BA Music plan or BA Music plan dual student please be assured that you will be able to complete your program requirements, and we are here to assist you with planning your enrolment.
What is changing in 2025?
1. Music Extended Major (Only) – Discontinuation
Due to the revisions of the curriculum for the School of Music, the Music Extended Major will no longer be offered to commencing students. For continuing students, you can plan your enrolment to meet the requirements of your Music Extended Major with the completion planner below.
2. Music specialisation– Discontinuation for Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Education (Secondary) students only
Due to the revisions of the curriculum for the School of Music, the Music Specialisation will no longer be offered to commencing students. Commencing students seeking to have two Music teaching areas will be directed to apply for the new Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) dual program. For continuing students, you can plan your enrolment to meet the requirements of your Music Specialisation Major with the completion planner below.
3. Popular Music and Technology Major and Minor – Discontinuation
Due to the revisions of the curriculum for the School of Music, the Popular Music and Technology Major and Minor will no longer be offered to commencing students. A new Popular Music Minor will be introduced from 2025. For continuing students, you can plan your enrolment to meet the requirements of your Popular Music and Technology Major or Minor with the completion planners below.

4. Music Major and Minor – Changes to Requirements
There have been some minimal changes to the curriculum for both the Music Major and Minor. For continuing students, you can plan your enrolment to meet the requirements of your Music Major or Minor with the completion planners below.
5. Music Psychology Minor – Changes to Requirements
There have been some minimal changes to the curriculum for Music Psychology Minor. For continuing students, you can plan your enrolment to meet the requirements of your Music Psychology Minor with the completion planner below.

2023 Changes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Major and Minor
Changes to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Major and Minor include:
- ABTS1000 Introduction to Aboriginal Studies and ABTS1010 Introduction to Torres Strait Islander Studies both Level 1 Compulsory Courses for 2023 commencing students (applicable to Major and Minor)
- ABTS2010 Indigenous Gender Matters and ABTS2030 Exploring Indigenous Art, Film, Music and Literature Through Iconic Works both Level 2 Compulsory Courses for 2023 commencing students (both compulsory in Major only)
- ABTS2020, ABTS2060, ABTS3030, ABTS3040 and ABTS3080 have been discontinued
- ANTH2010, ANTH2260 and ARTT2103 introduced to the Major and Minor as Level 2 Elective Courses
- ABTS3050 Independent Project in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (4 units) introduced to Major as Level 3 Compulsory Course for 2023 commencing students (compulsory in Major only)
- ABTS3020 becomes a Compulsory Level 3 Course for 2023 commencing students (compulsory in Major only)

2022 Changes to Media and Digital Cultures Major and Minor
Changes to the Media and Digital Cultures Major and Minor:
- COMU3005 Media Cultures (Compulsory) has been discontinued and is being replaced with the new course COMU3300 (incompatible with COMU3005)
- Four new courses have been introduced into the major and minor:
All other 2021 courses are still offered, and a continuing student can complete their plan requirements as outlined.
