Changes to Bachelor of Music (Honours)

The University has recently completed a review of the Bachelor of Music (Honours) (BMus(Hons)) program, and as a result there have been changes for students commencing in Semester 1, 2025.

These changes have been made to ensure a streamlined, simplified, and sustainable range of curriculum offered by the School of Music. Accordingly, the Bachelor of Music (Honours) (4 year) program has been discontinued and replaced this with the new Bachelor of Music (3 year) and Bachelor of Music (Honours) (1 year) programs.

These changes will affect all students commencing the BMus or BMus dual programs in Semester 1, 2025.

As a continuing BMus(Hons) or BMus(Hons) dual student please be assured that you will be able to complete your program requirements and we are here to assist you with planning your enrolment.

1. What is changing in 2025?

A new 3-year Bachelor of Music program for students commencing in 2025.

For students commencing in 2025, a new 3-year Bachelor of Music (BMus) program will be offered, and this will replace the 4-year Bachelor of Music (Honours) (BMus(Hons) program.

Commencing students will complete the 3-year program that will not include an embedded Honours experience. Accordingly, the new Bachelor of Music programs requires 24 units of BMus Core Courses and 8 units of BMus Flexible Core Courses, with 16 units of General Elective courses.

Please note that the introduction of the Bachelor of Music (Honours) (1 year) program will only be effective from 2026, and is not currently available to view on the Programs and Courses website.

2. Year 1 and Year 2 BMus(Hons) or BMus(Hons) dual students

Students in Year 1 and 2 of the current BMus(Hons) or BMus(Hons) dual are directed to consider changing programs to the new Bachelor of Music (3 year) or new Bachelor of Music dual program.

If you apply to change to the new program in Semester 1, 2025, you will need to submit a program change request to the Faculty by 9 February 2025 (program change requests open 27 November 2024). For all important enrolment dates see the 2025 Academic Calendar.

Once you have applied to change to your new program you can then review and plan your 2025 enrolment with the provided transition planner.

3. Year 3 and Year 4 BMus(Hons) or BMus(Hons) dual students

Students in Year 3 or Year 4 of the current BMus (Hons) or BMus (Hons) dual are encouraged to stay in their current program and complete their program requirements before 2027.

All BMus (Hons) Core Courses will be offered until 2027. If you wish to determine whether your program of study will be affected by these changes, please consult the completion planners listed below.

4. Interruption Information

After commencing your program, you might want to take a temporary break. Officially, this is called 'interrupting studies'. From 2023, regardless of when you commenced your UQ studies, there is a limit to the length and number of interruptions you can take, and a new process to apply for an interruption and/or return from an interruption.

As a student enrolled in a discontinued program, you must apply to interrupt your studies to retain a place within your program. Failing to apply to interrupt your studies can result in your enrolment being suspended or cancelled.
