Changes to UQ’s Music offerings in 2025
The following changes to UQ’s Music offerings have been approved for commencement in 2025. UQ will introduce a new 3-year Bachelor of Music which will replace the current 4-year Bachelor of Music (Honours). Along with changes to the music degree there will be new dual degrees with Arts, Science and Education (Secondary) as well as changes to the majors and minors in the Bachelor of Arts.
Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music gives you the opportunity to develop both practical skills and theoretical knowledge to forge a successful career composing, playing, researching or teaching music. Music technology and musicianship is embedded alongside practice-led courses with individual lessons, ensemble workshops, masterclasses, lecturers and tutorials.
The School of Music’s long tradition of excellence in musicianship, music history and music technology ensures graduates have broad knowledge of musical discourses. You can learn how to compose film and game music, analyse music in media, manage collaborative media projects and develop your creative voice as a musician in today's music industry. Get real experience recording with professional artists and work on releases at Corella Recordings, our student-run record label.
You also have the opportunity to participate in work experiences with the UQ Symphony Orchestra, UQ Wind Symphony and UQ Chamber Singers, as well as Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Musica Viva, Queensland Music Festival, 4MBS Classic FM and other industry partners. By developing broad range of skills, you are equipped with highly transferable abilities, making you well positioned to adapt to a changing professional world.

Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education (Secondary)

Music has the power to impact a students' life. Explore the rich and complex world of music education by becoming a music teacher.
You'll explore how to teach and how people learn, in courses designed specifically for music educators. You'll then apply your knowledge in classrooms. Throughout your program you’ll be immersed in hands-on workshops, school visits and supervised placements, gaining a strong understanding of day-to-day life in a secondary school.
Individual lessons in the Bachelor of Music help you excel in your chosen instrument or voice. To prepare for a teaching career, you'll extend your skills across a range of instruments, and learn techniques for teaching classroom music and directing music ensembles. You'll graduate as a versatile professional, equipped to teach in schools and other educational contexts, create and perform music.
This program is suitable for students who wish to become a specialist choral/instrumental teacher and a classroom music teacher. Students who wish to become a classrom teacher of music and second teaching area (such as English or Mathematics) should undertake the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) dual program and major in Music.

Bachelor of Arts – majors and minors*

Music (Major or Minor)
Develop knowledge about the many social and historical meanings of music.
Students will explore the written and aural complexities of music and approach the study of music in an engaging way. Graduate career options include teaching, professional musician, arts administration, publishing, media and writing.
Popular Music (Minor only)
Popular music has the power to uplift, stimulate, comfort, motivate and communicate. Students will learn to express themselves through writing and music production and become technically equipped for changing music-making environments. Graduates may find work in teaching, music production, broadcasting and audio engineering.
Music Psychology (Minor only)
Learn how to understand music from diverse perspectives, including the scientific study of the mind, brain and behaviour. Your study also covers social interaction, and the everyday uses and therapeutic applications of music. Graduates can find roles in music practice, educational, therapeutic and organisational contexts.
