What inspired you to study education/teaching?
I recognise that all careers involving helping others but I had a particular passion for working with children and I decided to pursue this profession. I would like to contribute by helping students to build upon the basic foundations and help them to explore and find their own passions
What are the positives of studying to be a teacher?
One of the positives of being a teacher is that you learn something new every day and you know you are making a significant contribution to the lives of children - this term, I have been able to work with the students and track their progression across the different subject areas. It is rewarding to see how far the students have come and where they are headed
Do you feel well-equipped you to meet the challenges of a teaching career?
I believe my placement in combination with my study at The University of Queensland has provided me with the opportunity to apply theory to my practice. One of the main challenges I face as a beginning teacher would be behaviour management and I have practiced a range of strategies to create a safe, supportive space for my students such as establishing clear expectations and praising positive behaviour.
What has been your biggest take away from your placement?
It is important to have fun but also have serious times with the children - learning is supposed to be a positive experience for children which is highly relevant and engaging for them
Why did you choose UQ to study primary education?
Because I knew of past students that had a positive experience and UQ has a beautiful vibrant campus.
What do you love about studying primary education at UQ? (What are the positives?)
The practical workshops compliment the lectures and tutorials, participation in the workshops helped me feel more equipped to meet the teaching demands of the future.
What are the best features of UQ’s primary education programs?
UQ’s Bachelor of Primary Education develops graduates flexible and creative teaching techniques that caters to the diverse learning needs of children. Throughout my degree I’ve had the chance to experience a number of different childcare settings, I’ve been in an early child care centre, a special school and a high school setting. I’ve found across my degree that I have studied all the different subjects areas and I haven’t just been limited to one, because I have studied all the subject areas I feel more equipped to meet the challenges of the classroom.
What would I tell someone interested in studying education at UQ?
I would encourage anyone who is thinking about becoming a teacher to come to UQ and study. UQ prepares you for the teaching world and offers not only high class academic learning but also hands on practical experience. The School of Education is very supportive throughout your study, I felt supported by like-minded students and staff that have become mentors and friends.
