HASS Tutor Training

All tutors commencing at UQ are required to complete three hours of compulsory, paid orientation online modules. In addition to these online modules, the Faculty of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS) runs paid training on the role and nature of tutoring at UQ for new tutors. Please note that the training is offered in 3 sessions, and you need to register for each session separately to be reimbursed for your time.

Upcoming HASS tutor training sessions

Session 1: Fostering student learning

Date	Thursday, 19 February 2026 (O-Week)
Time	10am-12pm (2 hours)
Venue	Forgan Smith (Building 1) – Room E212

The first session of the Tutors@UQ program focuses new tutors to think about student learning and their role in fostering student learning. Principles of learning are discussed, along with strategies to assist tutors in facilitating tutorials, practicals, and so on. A key focus of this session is on teaching across diversity and creating inclusive and safe learning environments. The concepts of active engagement and inclusive environments for learning are emphasised, and the facilitators model several small group learning strategies during the session. Case studies are used to engage tutors in real scenarios they might face and to build their confidence and preparedness for tutoring.

Session 2 : Building an academic career

This second session of the Tutors@UQ programme is designed for tutors seeking to deepen their understanding of the university's organisational context and advance their professional development. Participants will explore how teaching can serve as a foundation for building an academic career, gaining insights into navigating the higher education landscape and positioning themselves for future opportunities.

Session 3: Assessment and moderation

The third session of the Tutors@UQ program focuses largely on assessment and moderation. Using case studies, tutors explore real scenarios around marking, time management, and student remark requests. The facilitator's role is centred on managing small group activities and drawing broader conclusions relevant to all tutors during the whole group discussions for effective tutoring practices. The participants go through an example of working with a small assessment item to attempt marking without and then with rubrics, moderating marking in a team, and providing feedback.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about HASS Tutor Training

Who is the HASS Tutor Training for?

This training is designed for people new to tutoring and marking in HASS, at UQ.

Is the training compulsory?

No. But it is strongly recommended. You will get hands-on training, and you will have an opportunity to meet other tutors from your School and from the Faculty more broadly.

It’s 5 hours – do I have to attend all five hours?

No, we recognise tutors’ needs vary and have structured this as 3 separate sessions. You can choose to come to one, two or all three, depending upon your professional needs.

Will I be paid for attending?

If you are a HASS tutor and have not attended the training previously you will be reimbursed for your time. Please ensure you complete the registration form, in order to trigger payment.

I’ve attended HASS Tutor Training in a previous year, but the structure was very different, do I need to attend this training?

No. The material being offered in this training is similar in content to what has been offered in previous years, however it has been restructured to enable people to select the session(s) most relevant to them.

I’ve attended this training before – can I attend again?

Yes – but you will not be paid for attending a second time.

I’ve tutored previously in another institution, do I still need to attend?

Yes – we will be talking about tutoring generally, but also speaking to the UQ context and ensuring you know about relevant UQ policies and procedures.

I’m marking but not teaching – is this still relevant for me?

Yes, the third session just deals with assessment and marking. You are welcome to enrol in this session only.

I want to attend but I have a date clash. What can I do?

The training is held at the start of every semester, usually during Orientation Week. As much of the training occurs through group discussion and exercises, just like a tutorial, the training is not recorded. We provide copies of all handouts and slides on this site (they will be made available close to the training dates to ensure currency).
Please note that the materials provided here are not online training modules. They are simply copies of resources. As such, you will not be paid for accessing these resources. You need to attend a session in person to be reimbursed for your time. Please join us next semester.

Who runs the training?
