Dear Colleagues,
I am very happy to announce the appointment of two Deputy Associate Deans.
In the role of Deputy Associate Dean (Academic) for 2019, please join me in welcoming Associate Professor Sally Butler. Sally Butler is an art historian in the School of Communication and Arts and Program Director of the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours). Sally has three books and over 70 publications in the field of visual arts and is a freelance curator and arts writer with several exhibitions touring across Queensland, Australia and abroad. Her research and teaching fields cover Australia Pacific Indigenous arts, cross-cultural aesthetics, and the interdisciplinary roles of art in visual politics, visual literacy, and cultural tourism.
Sally’s commitment to teaching and learning innovations include the development of intensive indigenous art & culture field schools, internship courses developed with industry partners, and inter-Faculty multi-disciplinary collaborative teaching in the field of advanced humanities. Sally’s ongoing commitment to embedding indigenous knowledge in the teaching curriculum, interdisciplinary collaborative teaching, and promoting humanities research as professional practice, is acknowledged by an Arts Faculty ATE, UQ ATE, and appointment as Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Our new Deputy Associate Dean (Research) is Associate Professor Kim Wilkins, also from the School of Communication and Arts, where she researches and teaches in the fields of creative writing, publishing, and book culture. She is lead Chief Investigator on the ARC Discovery Project “Genre Worlds: Australian Popular Fiction in the 21st Century,” and is Publishing Director of the small press publisher “Corella Press,” an innovative work-integrated learning project in the Master of Writing, Editing, and Publishing. She is also a published novelist, with thirty book-length works of fiction in print, and is translated into twenty-one languages.
Kim is particularly interested in nurturing connections across disciplines, and has collaborated with researchers in Medicine, Business, and Psychology. She has a strong interest in engagement and collaboration, and a commitment to articulating the value of HASS fields both in the University and in the community.
Welcome to these new roles, Sally and Kim! We are delighted to be working with you.
Kind regards,
Heather Zwicker
