HASS subjects on the move

The University of Queensland has been ranked in the top 50 in the world in 24 specific subject areas, up from 22 last year, in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

Specific subject areas in humanities and social sciences where the QS report ranks UQ in the world’s top 50 are: Education (19th), Sociology (27th), Anthropology (43rd), English Language and Literature (46th), Communication and Media Studies (48th), and Development Studies (48th).

HASS Executive Dean Professor Heather Zwicker said humanities and social sciences disciplines showed significant upward jumps in the QS Subject rankings this year.

Two humanities and social sciences disciplines were among these: Sociology, up 14 places, and Anthropology, in which UQ rose eight places.

“UQ’s leaders are focused on producing high-quality research with globally significant impact, developed in collaboration with local public partners.

“Academic staff in the humanities and social sciences bring their best to work every day,” she said.

“These results endorse HASS’s forward-thinking investment in humanities and social sciences for the future.”

In broad subject areas, QS ranked UQ sixth in Arts and Humanities (equal 78th globally) and sixth in Social Science and Management (equal 48th globally).
