Bachelor of Humanities/Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
Understanding your Bachelor of Humanities/ Laws (Honours) Program
This page provides advice for the Bachelor of Humanities section of your program. Click here for program advice relating to your Bachelor of Laws (Honours) program.
The information below explains some of the terms used and the requirements of your Bachelor of Humanities program.
Programs, Courses and Units
At UQ we refer to your degree as a program and a subject as a course.
Courses
Most UQ courses are 2 units in value.
If you are a full-time student you will undertake 8 units (4 courses) each semester.
Units
To complete the Bachelor of Humanities you must complete 32 units comprising:
(i) 8 units for core courses, and
(ii) 24 units for the Western Civilisation extended major
Planning your Program
At UQ, a standard full-time workload is 16 units over the year – this breaks down to 8 units (or four courses) each semester.
You don’t have to decide what courses you want to do for your whole program at the start of your first semester – we only ask you to choose courses one year at a time.
So, all you need to worry about at this stage is choosing four courses for Semester 1 and four courses for Semester 2, taking into account all compulsory core courses.
The 2021 Bachelor of Humanities/Laws (Honours) study plan can assist you in planning your program.
The Program Planner tool is designed to help you understand your program structure and select courses that may be of interest to you in your first year of studies.
The Program Planner will also allow you to plan your enrolment for the duration of your program, can include any credit you may have from previous tertiary study and enables you to consider undertaking a semester on exchange.
Please note that the Program Planner is a guide only and does not enrol you in your courses. You must enrol in courses through mySI-net.
The Starting at UQ website provides a guide for completing your enrolment.
Camp
This Orientation Camp aims to be a friendly and fun way for commencing students in the Bachelor of Advanced Humanities (Honours) and the Bachelor of Humanities / Bachelor of Laws (Honours) programs to get to know one another as well as some of the UQ staff and later year student mentors. Professor Alastair Blanshard, the Program Director and first semester course convener for The Classical World, Dr Jennifer Clement, course convener for Interdisciplinary Thinking, and Dr Karin Sellberg, course convener for Humanities and the Big Questions (a third level course taken later in the program), will run the camp together with a team of terrific student mentors.
Students will go through their degree together over the next four to five years and will be experiencing some challenging learning adventures, so this is a great opportunity to break the ice and become a team.
All students will receive an email with details about registration for the camp shortly after accepting a place in the program.
2021 Camp Activities include:
- Excursion to Point Lookout and walk through the Point Lookout Gorge
- Visit to Stradbroke Island Historical Museum at Dunwich
- Tour of the Goompi Trail Indigenous cultural workshop
- Group activity exploring Dunwich key sites on foot
- Evening activities with student mentors
2021 Conditions of Participation:
Spaces are limited. If you are interested in attending the camp, please:
- complete the attached ‘CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION FORM’
- return the completed form to Anjaline Lata via advhum@uq.edu.au by Friday 29 January, 2021.
- also include any disabilities, or specific requirements/dietary restrictions that need to be taken into consideration in this orientation program.
An itinerary and list of items to bring is available here. Please keep luggage to a minimum as we are restricted with the amount of luggage that can be taken onto the transport, and you will be walking to the Moreton Bay Research Station from the Ferry Terminal and back again. This is a short 5-10 minute walk.
We look forward to meeting our new students at camp!
