Honours helps students to develop a depth of understanding in one or more fields of knowledge in the humanities and social sciences, and culminates in advanced research training.

The Honours Program also prepares students for further study at the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level.

Admission to a fourth year Honours program is available to eligible students after the completion of a three-year undergraduate program. An honours year is already included in the 4-year BMus program.

Honours students continue an in-depth study of their particular specialisation and write a major research paper on a specific topic.

Honours focuses on developing and consolidating the knowledge and skills students acquire during undergraduate study, with particular emphasis on utilising those skills in a sustained and purposeful way to conduct independent research. Apart from content knowledge, employers value the reliability and capacity for independent work and the skill at writing substantial reports; which are demonstrated by successful completion of Honours.

An Honours year will allow students to:

  • pursue further study in a specialist area;
  • enhance their capacity for independent research and to acquire research skills appropriate to their area of specialisation; and
  • experience training towards postgraduate research degrees, and a specialist career.
