SAMPLE PROGRAM PLANNER
The standard full-time workload at UQ is 16 units (8 courses) over the year. So this breaks down to 8 units (4 courses) each semester. You don’t have to decide what courses you want to do for your whole program at the start of first semester; we only ask you to choose courses one year at a time. So all you need to worry about at this stage is choosing four courses for semester one and four courses for semester two taking into account the compulsory core courses. It might look something like this:
Semester 1 | Semester 2 |
---|---|
Course 1 - COMU1120* (Core) - 2 units | Course 1 - Flexible core, Intro minor or elective |
Course 2 - JOUR1112 (Core) - 2 units | Course 2 - JOUR1710 (Core) - 2 units |
Course 3 - COMU1140* (Core) - 2 units | Course 3 - COMU1130 (Core) - 2 units |
Course 4 - Flexible Core, Intro minor or elective | Course 4 - Flexible core, Intro minor or elective |
* Course also offered in Semester 2.
Please refer to the course list and program rules on the Bachelor of Journalism courses and program website.
Please note that the program planner is a guide only and does not enrol you in your courses, you must enrol in courses through mySI-net.

2017 Program restructure (pre 2017 students)
The Bachelor of Journalism has been restructured. Changes to the program will come into place from semester 1, 2017. These changes, as summarised below, will primarily impact students new to the program in 2017:
- The course list has changed – some courses are no longer offered, and new courses have been developed
- Part A will be 24 units and Part B will be 8 units (core compulsory courses)
- Sport Studies and Popular Music and Technology majors will not be available (all majors are to be discontinued)
- New minors in Economics, Film and Television Studies, Interaction Design, Political Science, Public Relations and Writing will be available
What does this mean for current students (or those who intend to return to their BJ studies)?
You will be able to complete with the program structure/rules that were in place when you commenced -
- you will not need to change to the new structure - you will be able to complete the core Part A (Group 1) and Part B (Group 2) as in your current program and complete with the majors that were included in the program prior to 2017 (ie, Sport Studies and Popular Music and Technology)
- you may be able to take one of the new minors (in Economics, Film and Television Studies, Interaction Design, Political Science, Public Relations or Writing)
- however, some courses on the 2016 list will no longer be offered, some courses have been renamed, and new ones have been introduced. This is likely to necessitate some course substitutions
