Communication (single and dual program) at UQ puts you at the centre of the contemporary information society and economy. In the core courses you will develop understanding and skills in a number of areas: visual, written, multimedia and spoken and interpersonal communication and in researching and exploring communications. You then specialise by choosing a major in Communication, Media and Culture, Public Relations or Mass Communication.

Communication is an expanding area of employment and the Bachelor of Communication is a preparation for careers in public relations, advertising, media planning and analysis; film and television; web design and management; business communication; health promotion, and many more.

First year plans

In order to complete the BCommun you must complete:

  • 32 units from the BCommun course list, comprising—
    • (i) 16 units for core courses, and
    • (ii) 16 units for a major; and
  • (b) 16 units, comprising—
    • (i) a second major, or
    • (ii) two minors, or
    • (iii) both—
      • (A) 8 units for a minor, and
      • (B) 8 units of general elective courses from the BCommun course list or other undergraduate course list(s); or
    • (iv) general elective courses from the BCommun course list or other undergraduate course list(s).

A student must complete no more than 24 units of level 1 courses

See the course list for courses that can be studied as part of the Bachelor of Communication.

The standard full-time workload at UQ is 16 units (8 courses) over the year. So this breaks down to 8 units (4 courses) each semester. You don’t have to decide what courses you want to do for your whole program at the start of first semester; we only ask you to choose courses one year at a time. So all you need to worry about at this stage is choosing four courses for semester one and four courses for semester two taking into account the compulsory core courses.  However, at the start of your BCommun you should consider which major you would like to undertake from Part B. By doing this you can start to formulate a rough plan of what your four years of study might look like. It might look something like this:

Semester 1 Semester 2
Course 1 - COMU1120* (Core) - 2 units Course 1 - COMU1052 (Core) - 2 units
Course 2 - WRIT1200 (Core) - 2 units Course 2 - Introductory  major**
Course 3 - COMU1140* (Core) - 2 units Course 3 - COMU1130 (Core) - 2 units
Course 4 - Introductory  minor or elective - 2 units Course 4 - Introductory  major**, minor, or elective - 2 units

*These courses are offered in both Semester 1 and 2.

** Introductory Major courses include:

  • For Digital Media major: COMU1050 (Semester 1)

  • For Public Relations major: COMU1152 (Semester 2)

Please refer to the course list and program rules on the Bachelor of Communication courses and program website.

Please note that the program planner is a guide only and does not enrol you in your courses, you must enrol in courses through mySI-net.

What courses do I need to do?

To ensure that students are familiar with their program rules and requirements we ask that all students complete a self-progression check in the first instance. Then if you still have questions or concerns about your outstanding program requirements the Faculty would be happy to review your progression check and provide advice. To complete a progression check please use the following steps:

Step 1 – Print out your studies report from mySI-net using the following steps:

  • Log into mySI-net
  • From the top left-hand side menu select the option for ‘Studies Report’
  • Follow the prompts

Step 2 – Select your program from the list:

Step 3 – Select your year of commencement from the top right hand side and click ‘Change’.

Step 4 – Go to ‘Program Rules and Requirements’ and ensure that you have understanding of your program requirements, for example, do you need to select a major; is there an advanced level requirement etc. Once you understand your program requirements you can move to the next step.

Step 5 - Select the green course list button on the left hand menu.

Step 6 – Compare your studies report to the course list and tick off the courses you have completed, and note the courses you are planning to complete in the future. Ensuring that you have completed all of your compulsory courses, and courses towards your major(s).

Step 7 – Once you have gone through and ticked off all of your completed courses, view your program rules and requirements again to ensure that you are meeting all requirements (e.g. overall structural requirements, advanced level requirements etc). Ensure you can tick off that you have completed (or are planning to complete) all of the requirements.

Please Note

• To have your progression check verified by a Student Administration Officer, or if you have questions or concerns, please upload your completed check by signing in here using your UQ username and password.  Please ensure that you upload your studies report, course list(s) (ensuring you have indicated all completed courses and future enrolments), and program rules with your notes.

• A course may only count once toward the program (including dual programs).

• Dual degree students must consult with the relevant faculty regarding outstanding requirements for the other component of the dual.

2017 Program Restructure (Pre 2017 Students)

The Bachelor of Communication has been restructured.

Changes to the program will come into place from semester 1, 2017. These changes, as summarised below, will primarily impact students new to the program in 2017:

  • The course list has changed – some courses are no longer offered, and new courses have been developed
  • Part A (core compulsory courses) will be 20 units
  • Majors will have 12 units minimum
  • Mass Communication; and Communication, Media and Culture majors and minors will not be available
  • A new major, Digital Media, will be available
  • New minors in Digital Media, Journalism and Writing will be available

What does this mean for current students (or those who intend to return to their BCommun studies)?

This depends on how much progress you have already made towards your program and whether you opt to complete your program as planned or change to the new program.

  • you will be able to complete with the program structure/rules that were in place when you commenced
    • you will not need to change to the new structure you will be able to complete the core Part A (16 units) as in your current program and complete with the majors/minors (of 16 units) that were included in the program prior to 2017 (ie, Mass Communication, and Communication and/or Media and Culture)
    • you may be able to take one of the new minors (in Digital Media, Journalism or Writing)
    • however, some courses on the 2016 list will no longer be offered, some courses have been renamed, and new ones have been introduced. This is likely to necessitate some course substitutions
  • some students may be able to transition to the restructured program to take the new (12 unit) Digital Media major – we strongly recommend this option only for those students who have completed 16 units or less towards the BCommun

Checklists have been developed to assist you to make a plan for your enrolment, as follows:

Where can I get help?

Once you have completed a checklist and made a plan, staff in the Faculty are available to check your plan. You can email your completed checklist to, or call on 3365 1333 to make a one-to-one appointment with an advisor. Appointments are available starting 27 October 2016, up to Friday 20 January. The Faculty will endeavour to check and return checklists emailed within 3 weeks, however please note that this will depend on peak activities such as graduations and the volume of enquiries.

It is strongly recommended that you come up with a plan no later than 13 January 2017, in order to ensure that there is time to check your plan, and for you to enrol. Checklists received after 13 January may not be checked in time for the commencement of semester.
